The following day, we caught a public bus from el Calafate to Puerto Natales. This drive takes about six hours. I was RIGHT up front, which was nice (we got a view the entire ride), but also a bit cramped. I tried to sleep and mostly-failed.
The Chilean border crossing was a trip. Argentina was basically come inside, we’ll stamp your passport. Merry on your way. Chile, you take all your bags off with you, stand in line FOREVER, they scan all your bags for fruit and veggies and such, including your big bags, and the process takes about an hour. They tell you if you lose your PDI paper, you may be charged a fine when you leave. It’s all rather cumbersome.
